To Break an Ancient HeartGreat ancient one whose fingers graze
The clouds and sun and moon
Whose aged and knowing eyes do gaze
At generations passed too soon.
One who held the sky in hand
Gnarled with age and wonder
Watcher of Time's slipping sand
Throughout time, left to ponder
Oh, one who stands taller still
than changes wrought by tiny hands
Whose timeless being does fulfill
the memory of forgotten lands
One who stretched arms to extend
O'er crying, laughing children
Whose vigil ever did forefend
An empty hole left barren
Great one, what does trouble you?
What ceases your great beating heart?
What stops you ageless watch in lieu
of your grand and wondrous part?
Great steel teeth that bite and tear
and bring about an end undone
Great claws that render bare
And break the heart of my ancient one
The endless scream that echoes clear:
What crime is this? What murder done?
The endless call, oh so dear:
That breaks the heart of my ancient one?

The man's hands were clammy, his handshake limp. Rumpled suit, porkpie hat, briefcase... oh Jes-- oh dear, a salesman. God's smile slipped a little but He soldiered on gamely. With luck He could shoo the poor guy away in a few minutes.
"So, what can I do for you?"
The man sat, briefcase across his knees. "Sector 2-7-0! Everyone's talking about it! What do you call it? Man and merman?"
"Man and woman, actually. And thanks. But we're pretty busy around here, and..."
"Oh! Right! No time for the wicked, eh?" The salesman winked and popped his briefcase,
